First United Methodist Church History

The First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg was a church plant of Caledonia Methodist Church. In 1872, the Rev. R.F. Bumpas organized the forerunner of the present church; the first building constructed for that congregation faced Roper Street. An arsonist burned the church in 1893, but in the next year, a new white church was built, a few yards from the remains of the first one.

In 1913 a new lot was purchased at the present site. Due to World War I, there were many delays and the final completion was in late 1918. In the 1940’s it was decided that the church needed an educational building so fund-raising campaigns and gifts made it possible for that to occur and it was completed in 1952.

Throughout the years the church acquired the Scotland Memorial Library (now the Ed Guest Building) and built the Nettie Hammond Fellowship Hall (our church office, classrooms, fellowship hall and kitchen).
First United Methodist Church has had approximately 26 Pastors from the beginning to the present day.
