First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg Resources
First UMC Library
Located next to the church office in the Nettie Hammond building, the church library has existed since 1969.
Following the “Guide Lines for Church Libraries”, the first books were Bibles of various translations and Bible Commentaries.
Early location was in the older education building. When the Hammond building was completed, the present space was provided, with furniture and shelving donated by the Ruark (a former pastor), and Butler families. Recently, a bookcase was given in memory of Martha Gibson, Peggy Jones’s mother.
Religious books were the first selections. The library committee made two major decisions: books selected by the librarian could be given as memorials, and wholesome-type choices, as well as religious selections, could be purchased or given as memorials. Today, at least one third of the books fall in the memorial category.
A card catalog exists for those wishing to choose by subject, author, or title.
Pat Butler, Betty Myers, and Laura Horne composed the early library committee.
Betty Barrett was librarian until 2005 when Peggy Jones became the librarian.
Primary areas of the library are 1. The Bible translations and study Bibles, Bible Commentaries, as well as a broad selection of religious books. 2. Biographies, 3. Fiction and Nonfiction, 4. Children’s books 5. Sermon DVD’s.
Special areas include books in the United Methodist Women’s Reading List and a choice selection of children’s books.
After recent inventories, there are approximately 1,000 hardbacks and 200 paperbacks.
Visit your church library as a source for inspiration, Bible study, lesson preparation, and enjoyment.
Contact Peggy Jones, librarian, should you wish to give a book as a memorial.
